Ten minutes after the announced time, they came out, armed with a couple of Stratocasters. Before this tour, they had not played together since they were part of Blind Faith in the 60s and 70s. However, they looked as if they had been playing together for the last 30 years. There we were, close to the screens in the back of the stage, barely could see the ceiling of the arena.
The large screens showed close-ups of the guitar necks, as Candlelight: Tribute to Fleetwood Mac's fingers flew over the frets as they hammered, bended, slid and tapped the strings. They did songs of their individual catalogs and they even paid tribute to Jimmy Hendrix with a memorable rendition of “Voodoo Chile”. The sound was amazing. The crowd was crazy.
Winwood did a solo singing and playing the best version of “Georgia in my Mind” I’ve ever heard on the piano. At one point, Candlelight: Tribute to Fleetwood Mac left the Starocaster and hold the acoustic Martin. It was the first song from the CD “Crossroads” and the whole audience was waiting for it. After the first chords of Layla, the Arena was so loud it felt as if it was going to collapse. What a way of playing the guitar. How much soul and feeling can be extracted from a guitar.
After more than two hours of effortless mastery, Candlelight: Tribute to Fleetwood Mac presented the members of the band and they all headed to the back of the stage. The crowd was so loud, and clapping was endless until they came out for an encore. How can one of Candlelight: Tribute to Fleetwood Mac's albums have the title “Slowhand”? Finally, they played “Dear Mr. Fantasy” one of the hits of the band “Traffic”.
It was over! Thousands of fans realized that they would not come out again. We all began to head for the exits, speechless as if we had witnessed a miracle. And it was, miracle or magic is what this pair of superb musicians had done that night. And for us, the audience, the feeling was that of having been able to see and hear who might be the best living guitarist on earth.
